Founded by Nia Weeks and Damien D. Smith, Detangled is platform integrating storytelling, legal education, and social activism through immersive travel and community-driven experiences. They empower attorneys, advocates, and policymakers to engage in Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs that deepen cultural competency, social justice advocacy, and economic development. These programs equip legal professionals with critical skills in financial equity, business law, movement lawyering, and international trade. From flexible virtual courses to in-depth workshops, Detangled ensures participants gain practical knowledge applicable to real-world advocacy.
In 2020, Detangled launched “The Road to 300K: Detangling the Vote,” a civic engagement initiative mobilizing Black women across Louisiana, increasing voter registration, and amplifying political power. The campaign reached over 270,000 Black women voters, engaged more than 50,000 Black women and 5,000 allies, and built a coalition of 120 Black-women-led organizations.
Since then, Detangled has expanded globally, executing over 280 projects in four countries. They’ve supported political campaigns, produced award-winning films and television shows, developed education programs, and consulted with governments and institutions on advocacy and policy. As Nia Weeks says, “Don’t move outside the box, move as if there is no box!” To learn more, visit dtangling.com.

At just 16, Nyla Choates set out to create the change she wanted to see. Now, as a senior at Spelman College, she is the powerhouse behind My Roots Are Rich, a brand dedicated to building self-confidence through representation. What started as a children’s book has grown into a full-fledged brand featuring coloring books, puzzles, dolls, clothing, and—coming February 1st—her newest launch, children’s pajamas!
Born from a lack of representation she experienced growing up in Silicon Valley, My Roots Are Rich goes beyond selling products—it makes an impact. Nyla has traveled across the U.S. and even to Ghana, donating books, reading to children in underserved communities, and showing them that their stories matter. She doesn’t just talk about change; she embodies it. Nyla told us, “I started this adventure to entrepreneurship at the age of 16 with a desire to be the change I wanted to see in this world. Through hard work and the grace of God I am seeing my dream become a reality daily.”
Nyla continues to expand her reach, proving that success is about perseverance. Reflecting on her journey, Nyla shares, “I started this adventure to entrepreneurship at the age of 16 with a desire to be the change I wanted to see in this world. Through hard work and the grace of God, I am seeing my dream become a reality daily.”
